Puppy Love

By far one of the best decisions Duncan and I have made as a married couple was getting a puppy!  A lot of our newly or almost married friends have asked us our opinion on whether or not to get a puppy as newlyweds, and we are always quick to say YES. 🙂  Having a puppy has taught us about responsibility, working together, and is just plain fun.

Growing up, I never had a dog.  Duncan grew up with multiple dogs his entire life.  Two weeks before our wedding, Duncan and I decided we wanted a dog of our own.  We bought a 6-week-old German Shepherd puppy and named her Kya.

Kya loved to fish with us, go play at the pond, and spend time with our families.  She was obedient, loyal, and gentle.  As most of you know, Kya passed away 2 weeks after her first birthday.  The vet found cancer in her GI tract, and her system failed. 😦

Losing Kya was unbelievably hard, but the joy she brought to our lives far outweighed the sadness.  She taught us so much and lived such a happy life.  It may sound silly if you have never lost a dog before, but it brought Duncan and I closer together and helped us to deal with difficult circumstances.  Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says that, “Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.  If one person falls, the other can reach out and help.  But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.” The loss of our first puppy made me even more thankful for the gift of marriage and the companionship of my husband!

A couple of weeks ago, we added another member to our little family.  Cannon is a 10-week-old German Shepherd.  He is fearless, affectionate, plays hard, and can be pretty loud.  Honestly, having a new puppy was harder than we remembered.  We’d forgotten that it takes a couple of nights for them to get used to their surroundings and actually sleep through the night.  I had forgotten how much work it takes to train a puppy to walk on a leash and to not to chew on everything in sight.

But I had also forgotten how sweet it is to cuddle a puppy and how exciting it is when they learn their first trick (even when it’s only “sit”!).  Having a dog is one of the simplest joys in life.  It’s crazy to think that, God-willing, Cannon will be the puppy our children grow up with someday.  So, if you are about to get married or are newly married, and you are wondering whether or not to get a dog……. you know what we would say…… 🙂
